They stopped only to rest the horses. They did not need rest or nourishment or even sleep anymore. They would get to Creaghaven in half the time that they would have otherwise.
Drake’s memories about his life returned slowly, and it made Hannah uneasy. Each time he made reference to his past she watched, waiting for him to look at her with accusation and revulsion. Thus far his late wife hadn’t been mentioned. And although he hadn’t touched Hannah, she could tell he believed they were lovers. She did not dissuade him, since it was true. But his memory came in chunks, and she didn’t know in what order they would return…. The memory of his wife’s death and Hannah’s refusal to help her could prove volatile to them. He was no longer a human that Hannah could control. He was as strong as she was now. Maybe stronger.
“My brother is a witch,” he said the second day of their journey. It was a mild day, perfect for travel. Hannah couldn’t remember the last time she had been able to enjoy the daylight—the sun on her face, the butterflies flitting about. Days had been for sleeping for so long that she had forgotten the pleasure of warm sunlight.
They had been riding in comfortable silence for some time when Drake made this statement with no preamble, indicating to Hannah that the memory had just descended on him.
“He…heals people…but not with herbs and charms and such…with his hands.” He held one of his hands in front of his face and looked at it wonderingly. He dropped his hand and frowned. “I admired him…but I also became vexed because healing hurt him, made him weak and sick.”
Hannah nodded approvingly. “Aye, that’s right. Is this the first you remember about your brother?”
“No…” But his voice was hesitant, and she assumed it was the first substantial memory he’d had. “I have remembered things from when we were children…but I couldn’t remember my own brother’s name or much else. He is William.” His gaze cut to Hannah. “And I remember you now.”
Hannah’s heart jerked in her chest, but she kept her face bland. “Is that so?”
“Aye.” And he said no more.
Her mind raced, wondering what he remembered. She wanted to ask, but she feared sounding too anxious. Instead she asked, “Do you remember anyone else from your family?”
His brows lowered as he strained to remember, but finally he shook his head. “I think my brother is married…but I’m not sure. And…I think I am married.” He looked at her sharply. “But not to you.”
Hannah’s throat tightened. “No, we are not married.”
“And my wife?”
“She is dead.”
The tight set of his shoulders relaxed slightly and he said, “Oh. Good. I mean, not good, but at least I am not…” He said no more, looking sheepish.
She understood what he meant. It was one thing to forget family and friends and your entire life, but to forget yourself, the kind of person you were, was quite another. To question your own morals or lack of—that was far worse.
